Yamuna Above Danger Mark

National News: The national capital, Delhi, and the surrounding NCR regions started raining again on Wednesday, causing difficulties for the people already facing floods. The continuous rain has spoiled the situation. The water level of the Yamuna River has risen to 207 meters, due to which water has entered the low-lying areas. So far, about 15,000 people from flood-affected areas have been evacuated and shifted to relief camps. However, in many areas, there are problems in relief operations due to the strong edge and depth of water. The administration teams are constantly posted on the spot.

Waterlogging on roads and increased traffic jams caused trouble

  • Heavy waterlogging was seen on many major roads in Delhi, Gurugram, Noida, and Ghaziabad.
  • People were stuck in traffic jams for hours in DLF and other areas of Gurugram.
  • Rainwater filled up around the WTT building in Noida Sector-16.

At many places, vehicles broke down and were parked on the roads, which worsened the traffic jam situation.

Office workers going to work in Gurugram and Noida had to face a lot of trouble. Many companies have advised employees to work from home.

Yamuna water level increased continuously, dangerous situation

The water level of Yamuna near Loha Pul was recorded at 206.85 meters at 9 am on Wednesday. By noon, it had crossed 207 meters.

  • 1.60 lakh cusecs of water is still being released per hour from Hathni Kund Barrage.
  • Due to the rising water level of the Yamuna, drains have started backing up, due to which the Nigambodh Ghat complex and surrounding areas were flooded.
  • The administration says that the water level may decrease from late Wednesday night, but the situation remains serious at the moment.
  • The water of Yamuna is now flowing, touching the historic Iron Bridge, which is a sign of danger.

Bad effect on rail and road traffic

  • The effect of the continuously rising water level is also visible on the traffic.
  • The movement of vehicles from the Iron Bridge was already stopped, now the operation of trains has also been stopped.
  • Local trains coming from Ghaziabad to Old Delhi are now being stopped at Shahdara station or diverted via Tilak Bridge and New Delhi.
  • Passengers have to wait for a long time at the station, and trains are running late for hours.

Flood Control Minister visits and keeps an eye on the situation

Delhi Irrigation and Flood Control Minister Pravesh Verma inspected the ITO Barrage on Wednesday and reviewed the situation. He said, "The government is fully alert. Relief and rescue operations are being carried out rapidly. Additional teams will be deployed if needed." Pravesh Verma also said that the work of evacuating people safely from the areas where water has flooded is going on.

Crowd in relief camps, increased trouble for people

Due to the increase in the number of people in the relief camps, space is falling short. Problems like shortages of food, water, and medicines are being faced in many places.

  • The challenge regarding the care of children and the elderly has increased.
  • The administration says that the work of delivering relief material is being done rapidly.

Rain and the rising water level of the Yamuna in Delhi-NCR have made the situation very serious. The government and the administration are constantly engaged in relief and rescue work, but according to the Meteorological Department, the coming 24 hours will be very important. If the rain continues, then the difficulties of the people may increase further.
